Phoenix hasn't received rain so far this monsoon. Is that rare for the Valley?

While it is unusual for the Phoenix metro area not to see measurable rain this late in July, it's not unheard of, according to National Weather Service.

PHOENIX — The number one question on the minds of Valley residents is "Where is the rain already?"

Even though the monsoon kicked off more than a month ago, Phoenix metro has not seen any measurable rain since late May.

Not receiving rain this late in July is not common, but not unheard of, according to National Weather Service.

While measurable rain typically occurs in Phoenix by now, the Valley has received the wet stuff after July 17 in 22 monsoons since 1896.

But if the rain continues to hold off through next week, then there might be new records broken: There have been five monsoons where rainfall totals have reached or exceeded 0.01 inch after July 28 and only two after July 30.

However, if the forecast holds, the Valley could see rain as early as Sunday, with the monsoon becoming more active early next week.
